I’m sure many of you have noticed a sudden influx in my response to any anti-god comments on Facebook or Twitter lately. I feel I should explain.
When you (my friends) post things about Religion, I’m with you. It’s a flawed institution that’s been mired by centuries of corruption and I participate in it with high caution and only as a means to associate with other, loving and “progressive” Christians. However, when someone makes anti-god posts or some shit about “keeping god out of hardcore, punk, etc” I’ve felt the need lately to respond. The reason is that I know damn well that YOUR news feeds and twitter rolls are NOT cram packed with people flouting their religious fervor and oppressing you with their “turn or burn” attitude. My assessment is that you’re taking what you perceive to be an easy potshot at something that will likely not be intelligently defended in your particular social network.
That being said, if you got together a stock sample of “Christians” in this country and put any one of you and I in a room with them, I’d probably end up on your side of the conversation 99.9% of the time. Until that happens though, don’t get butt-hurt over me honestly responding to your anti-god sentiments. We’re a mixed-bag, I’m grateful when you challenge me and I expect the same in return.
In closing:
I don’t want to “convert” you.
I don’t want you to be anybody besides you or I’d just STOP being your friend.
I don’t think you’re going to burn in an eternal fire.
If you want to know what I want and think, ASK ME!
